Percentage

  • Denoted by the percent sign %
  • Percentage or percent means per 100, or out of 100
  • Example: 20% of the apples are green, means 20 out of 100 apples are green
  • In order to use a percent in a calculation it must be converted to a fraction or decimal
  • A given percent is converted into a fraction by dividing it by 100
  • The resulting quotient represents the decimal equivalent of the given percent
  • Example: 20% = \frac { 20 }{ 100 } = 0.2
  • Note: A percent could be greater than 100%, which might reflect a substantial increase in quantity or value of something from one point in time to another

In mathematics, a percentage (from Latin per centum "by a hundred") is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100. It is often denoted using the percent sign, "%", or the abbreviations "pct.", "pct"; sometimes the abbreviation "pc" is also used. A percentage is a dimensionless number (pure number).
