Least Common Denominator (LCD)

  • The smallest value that is a multiple of the different denominators is called the least common denominator or LCD
  • Example: 12 is the the LCD of \frac { 1 }{ 4 } and  \frac { 2 }{ 3 }
  • Application: adding and subtracting fractions

In mathematics, the lowest common denominator or least common denominator (abbreviated LCD) is the lowest common multiple of the denominators of a set of fractions. It simplifies adding, subtracting, and comparing fractions.
